How to Choose the Right Boudoir Photographer for You
Booking a boudoir session is a big decision.
You're trusting someone to photograph you in one of your most vulnerable moments. That's why choosing the right photographer isn't just about who takes the prettiest pictures. It's about finding someone who makes you feel comfortable, respected, and confident throughout the entire experience.
So how do you know who's the right fit?
Here are a few things I recommend looking for before you book.
Choose Someone Who Specializes in Boudoir
There's nothing wrong with hiring a photographer who shoots weddings, families, or seniors.
But boudoir is different.
Posing, lighting, communication, and creating a safe environment all require a unique skill set. A photographer who specializes in boudoir has spent countless hours learning how to flatter different body types, guide clients who have never modeled before, and create an experience that feels empowering instead of intimidating.
Take time to browse their portfolio. If you love one or two images but the rest don't feel consistent, keep looking.
Look for Variety
Every woman deserves to feel like her gallery was created specifically for her.
As you browse a photographer's portfolio, ask yourself:
Do all of the clients look the same?
Are they photographing different body types?
Is there variety in poses and expressions?
Do all the galleries look identical?
A great boudoir photographer knows how to create images that feel personal instead of cookie cutter.

Read Reviews
Beautiful photos matter.
The experience matters even more.
Read reviews carefully. Look for comments about how clients felt during their session.
Did they feel comfortable?
Supported?
Guided?
Confident?
Those are the things you'll remember long after the session is over.
You can have the most talented photographer in the world, but if they make you feel awkward or unsupported, it will show in your experience.
Make Sure They Guide Posing
One of the biggest fears I hear is:
"I have no idea how to pose."
Good news...
You shouldn't have to.
Ask potential photographers how they direct clients during a session.
Do they demonstrate poses?
Do they coach you from head to toe?
Or do they simply tell you to "look natural?"
Personally, I demonstrate every pose before asking my clients to do it themselves. I'll tell you exactly where to place your hands, how to angle your body, where to look, and even how to breathe. I never want anyone wondering what they're supposed to be doing.

Has Your Photographer Been in Front of the Camera?
This one might not be on your checklist...but I think it should be.
Has your photographer ever done a boudoir session themselves?
Not a quick self-portrait. Not jumping in for a few photos during a workshop.
An actual session where they were the client.
Because if they've never experienced the nerves, vulnerability, excitement, and self-doubt that often come with stepping in front of the camera, how can they truly understand what you're feeling?
I make it a point to regularly get in front of the camera myself. Not because I need new profile pictures, but because I believe it makes me a better photographer.
I've felt the butterflies walking into a studio.
I've wondered if I packed the right outfits.
I've questioned whether I looked awkward in a pose.
I've experienced that little voice that whispers, "I hope these turn out."
Every time I book my own session, it reminds me what my clients are experiencing.
It reminds me to slow down.
To communicate clearly.
To celebrate the little victories.
To reassure someone when they're feeling unsure.
And to remember that this experience is about so much more than beautiful photos.
Do I think a photographer has to book a boudoir session to be talented?
Not at all.
But I do think there's incredible value in having walked in your clients' shoes.

Before you book, make sure you understand the photographer's privacy policy.
Will your images be shared automatically?
Do you get to decide?
Can you remain anonymous?

Every photographer has a different style.
Some are bright and airy.

Some lean heavily into glamour while others focus on storytelling or editorial imagery.
None of these styles are wrong.
The important thing is choosing a photographer whose work makes you stop scrolling and think,
"I want my photos to look like that."
Take some time to browse their portfolio. You should be excited by what you see, not just impressed by it.

Ask What's Included
Not every boudoir experience is the same.
Before booking, make sure you understand exactly what's included.
Questions worth asking include:
Is professional hair and makeup included?
How many outfits can I wear?
How many studio sets are included?
How many images are included?
Is there a Client Closet?
Are products like albums and wall art available?
What does the booking process look like?
How long will it take to receive my images?
Understanding these details ahead of time helps prevent surprises later.

Don't Choose Based on Price Alone
It's tempting to compare photographers based solely on price.
Instead, compare value.
Think about the photographer's experience, the quality of their work, how you're treated throughout the process, what's included in the session, and whether you feel comfortable trusting them.
The cheapest option isn't always the best value.
Neither is the most expensive.
Choose the photographer who offers the experience you're looking for.
Trust Your Gut
At the end of the day, trust your instincts.
If someone makes you feel rushed, pressured, or uncomfortable before you've even booked, that feeling probably won't disappear during your session.
Choose someone who makes you feel heard.
Someone who answers your questions.
Someone whose personality makes you feel at ease.
When you feel safe, it shows in your images.
The Right Photographer Is the One Who Makes You Feel Like Yourself
The "best" boudoir photographer isn't necessarily the one with the biggest social media following or the most awards.
It's the one whose style you love, whose personality puts you at ease, and whose experience makes you feel confident from your very first inquiry.
Take your time.
Ask questions.
Read reviews.
Look through full galleries.
Trust your instincts.
